Periodontal/Gum Disease

What is Periodontal Disease?

75 percent of Americans over the age of 35 have some form of periodontal disease, but the majority does not realize it. Periodontal disease (gum disease) is an infection in both the gum tissue and bone that keep your teeth in place and is one of the leading causes of adult tooth loss. In order to treat gum disease a patient requires a “deep cleaning”. Once treated, it can be maintained with regular check ups and cleanings.

Gum Disease Symptoms

If you have periodontal disease you may be experiencing persistent bad breath, bleeding gums when brushing or flossing, soft, swollen, or tender gums, gums pulling away from the teeth or tooth loss. You may notice inflammation of the gums between the teeth as well. If treatment is not received a more serious and advanced stage of gum disease may follow, including tooth loss. During your dental examination we will perform a full periodontal probing to measure the level of attachment between the gum tissue and teeth and take dental x-rays which will show any bone loss in the jaw bone. If you do have any infected areas we review the most appropriate treatment for you, usually a “deep cleaning”.

Gum Disease Treatment

If you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease you will require a “deep cleaning” to get rid of the bacteria that has built up under the gum line as well as broken down gum tissue. In order to effectively treat the infection we use an advanced combination therapy that includes scaling and root planning, soft tissue laser therapy and Arestin, a site-specific antibiotic treatment. This combination has been proven to provide a greater reduction in harmful bacteria as well as faster healing time and decreased pocket depths when compared to scaling and root planning alone. This combination therapy can be completed in as little as one appointment for your convenience.

Periodontal Disease Prevention and Maintenance

Regular dental check-ups and good home care are key in the prevention of periodontal disease as well as after gum disease treatment. After a “deep cleaning” it is important to initially be seen three to four times per year to help avoid future infection. And, as always, brushing twice a day and flossing daily are key factors in gum disease prevention.
